Men’s groups build community at Calvary Kooyong

This Loneliness Awareness Week, we celebrate the power of connection and the people who create it.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, we are celebrating the everyday ways people make room for connection.
A spare seat at the table, a warm welcome and an opportunity to share common interests can help people feel they belong and remind them they are not alone.
At Calvary Kooyong, volunteer Bruce is doing exactly that through the Men’s Groups he facilitates each month at Hyson Retirement Apartments and Huntly Residential Aged Care Suites.
Drawing on a career that included many years with Linfox, Bruce brings people together to hear from guest speakers and share stories from their own lives.
Speakers have included golf course groundskeepers, plastic surgeons, rescue vets and famous Melbourne chefs, sparking lively conversations among residents.
"The guest speakers are always interesting, but the real value is seeing the conversations that follow," Bruce said. "The men share their own experiences, build friendships and enjoy being part of a community."
The groups play an important role in supporting mental health and wellbeing by reducing isolation and creating opportunities for meaningful social connection.
"It's one of the highlights of the month," said one resident. "You hear fascinating stories, but it's also a chance to catch up with friends and enjoy a good conversation."
Another resident said the group fosters a strong sense of belonging.
"You feel part of something. It gives us a reason to come together and makes a real difference."
Bruce has seen the impact firsthand.
"Sometimes all people need is an invitation and a welcoming environment to feel comfortable joining in," he said.
The Men’s Groups are a wonderful example of this year’s Loneliness Awareness Week theme of making room.
Through shared stories, friendship and conversation, Bruce is helping to create a community where residents feel connected, valued and supported.
