Calvary Haydon knitting group making a difference one blanket at a time

Julie Carter has been volunteering with Calvary Haydon Aged Care’s knitting group for more than 14 years. Seeing knitting help the residents come out of their shell is why she keeps coming back.
“I think knitting is like an international language. Even the residents living with dementia get so much out of the group. They haven’t forgotten how to knit, and its gives them a sense of purpose,” Ms Carter said.
The knitting group meets every Monday morning over a cup of tea and cake. Most participants knit, however, some join just for the conversation. “It is the highlight of my week. My favourite part is chatting to the other residents and the lovely volunteers. Seeing people enjoy themselves is lovely,” Calvary Haydon resident, Sister Margaret Webb said.
Once the residents have knitted enough strips, a volunteer then sews them together to create handmade blankets. In line with Calvary’s mission of 'Being for others', the blankets are donated to those in need.
“Every week or two we donate a few blankets to those who are going through a tough time in their life. One of my favourite memories ever was joining the Vinnies Night Patrol. Seeing the smiles on the people’s faces who were receiving the blankets that night was so rewarding,” Calvary Haydon Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator, Reshmi Cox-Brogan said.
The Calvary Haydon knitting group has donated more than 600 blankets and 200 beanies since the group started. The knitting group was recently announced as a finalist at Ageing Australia’s 2025 You are ACE! Awards.
The awards recognise individuals, organisations and teams that have demonstrated exceptional care, service, innovation and compassion in caring for older and ageing Australians.
