Personal Care Worker, Jenny O’Connor, is one of more than a dozen staff members and volunteers who have been with The Mariner since it first began welcoming in residents.

“South West Rocks is a small and tight-knit community where everyone knows each other. When The Mariner first opened, we knew a lot of the residents already from out in the community. It is the same with the volunteers who have been with us since the beginning. We had that connection before and it only grows when a resident comes into the home,” Ms O’Connor said.

The idea for establishing an aged care home in the South West Rocks was first raised in 1999 by a group of women from the South West Rocks Uniting Church. The concept quickly gained the support of the community and through perseverance it became a reality in 2010.

Calvary The Mariner Home Support Officer, Sonya Thacker, reflected on how the home had grown over its 15-year history: “When we first moved in, it missed that homely feel but, now it is so welcoming and we do everything we can to make sure the residents feel like they’re at home,” Ms Thacker said.

Judith Mottee, visits the home every fortnight to play the piano for the residents. She has been volunteering at the home since it opened its doors.

The Mariner and its people

“The people are what makes The Mariner so special. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with a smile. The staff and residents are all wonderful and everyone is so helpful,” Ms Motee said.

Over the past few weeks excitement has been building as the home prepares to celebrate its 15th birthday. A red carpet, blue balloons, a two-course meal and a four-tiered birthday cake are all part of the finishing touches.

“We’ve all been busy preparing for today. We are just so excited,” Sandy Ellem, Calvary The Mariner resident, said.

But for Ms Ellem, it is the people she is most looking forward to celebrating with.

“My favourite part of living at The Mariner is the friendships. I struggled a little bit when I made the transition into aged care, but nowadays I enjoy it. I’ve made really good friends with the staff and the other residents,” Ms Ellem said.

It is a sentiment shared by the staff.

“I love working at The Mariner because of the residents and the staff. We’ve become a family in a way. Working in aged care allows you to develop a deep bond with those you’re working with and caring for,” Ms O’Connor said.

“I love what I do and that is why I have stayed. The residents are my favourite part of the job. I love learning new things from them and hearing them share their life stories,” Ms Thacker added.
