Over the last two years works have been undertaken to make the space more welcoming. The upgrades include a new kitchen, bathroom and improvements to the finishes. In addition, a data projector, large screen and new sound system have been installed.

Calvary Regional CEO Northern NSW, Luke Sams, said the refurbishment was made possible through the generosity of the community.

“The late Reverend John West raised $286,000 in funding from the community to create a more open and welcoming space for residents to come, pray and reflect,” Mr Sams said.

“The dedicated area is renamed ‘Father John’s Community Chapel’ to ensure Reverend West’s legacy has a lasting impact. Today also marks the tenth anniversary of Reverend West’s passing and we are grateful to have his family join us to commemorate his contribution to our community.”

Calvary Cessnock Aged Care Home Manager, Dyanne Johnston, said the dedicated area would help foster a sense of community in the home.

“Father John’s Community Chapel will give residents, their families and staff a dedicated area to come together to pray, reflect and celebrate,” Ms Johnston said.

“On behalf of Calvary, I thank the community for helping bring to life Reverend’s West vision for the benefit of our residents.”

In honour of her husband Reverend West, Mrs West quilted a wall hanging to be displayed in the new chapel.
