The not-for-profit hospital operator and aged care provider will cease operations at Calvary Central Park residential aged care home by mid-2023.

Calvary’s National Director of Strategy and Service Delivery, Vanessa Janissen, said the former Japara site acquired in November 2021 would still not meet the demands of modern aged care services even with significant investment.

“To adapt to the changing landscape of health and ageing, combined with policy changes and funding models, Calvary is innovating our service delivery and proactively responding to the needs of those we care for,” said Ms Janissen.

Calvary is currently considering lease and sale options for the Melbourne site, while progressing a detailed and supportive transition plan for residents to other homes across the Calvary network.

“We continue to work with various stakeholders to create an integrated care system that improves the care journey, while reducing the challenges of a complex health system. Our strategy embraces opportunities to provide the people we care for with more choice, better access and equity.

Calvary’s recent opening of the $154 million Kooyong precinct, bringing together the new specialist 32-bed Calvary Bethlehem Hospital, 69 retirement living apartments, and residential aged care home, is an example of the integrated care model.

The release of Calvary Central Park is in addition to three land sales currently in market across New South Wales and Victoria. The proceeds will be reinvested into existing facilities and new opportunities to further deliver integrated care offerings.

“To be able to grow, and provide care for an increasing number of people, Calvary must ensure our existing services enhance our service delivery with access to pathways that help generate more integrated services,” said Ms Janissen.
