At Calvary Kooyong, some of the most meaningful care arrives quietly, in the form of a therapy dog’s gentle presence.

The Kooyong precinct includes retirement living at Hyson Apartments, residential aged care at Huntly Suites, and Calvary Health Care Bethlehemhospital.

Each week, volunteer Terry visits with his four accredited therapy dogs, offering residents, patients and staff moments of comfort, connection and calm.

What begins as a simple visit often becomes something deeply personal and profoundly therapeutic.

Terry has witnessed extraordinary moments during his time at Kooyong. He recalls patients at end of life who had never owned pets before, yet formed deep connections with a particular dog in their final days.

He has also seen private or withdrawn residents unexpectedly open up, sharing memories, emotions and conversation, simply because a dog created a sense of safety in the room.

“Dogs have a way of reaching people where words sometimes can’t,” Terry said. “You see people relax, smile, and start talking, and that never stops being powerful.”

Each dog brings a different temperament, allowing connections to unfold naturally, whether through quiet companionship or playful engagement.

Over time, staff have observed reduced anxiety, improved mood and greater openness following visits, reinforcing the value of holistic, person‑centred care.

General Manager Shannon Thompson said the program reflects the heart of Calvary Kooyong’s approach to care.

“The presence of Terry and his dogs transforms our environment,” Mrs Thompson said. “These visits remind us that care is not only about treatment, it’s about dignity, comfort and meaningful human connection. The impact is felt by residents, families and staff alike.”

For Terry, the motivation remains simple.

“That smile when a dog walks into the room; that’s why I keep coming back,” he said.

Through moments of calm, joy and connection, Terry and his dogs continue to demonstrate the powerful role compassion and community play in healthcare, leaving lasting impressions long after the visit ends.
