Since joining the Mater’s Research Laboratory within the Department of Medical Oncology in 1993, Madhu has played a pivotal role in advancing cancer research, bringing specialist expertise in developing sophisticated methods to detect and measure compounds in blood using high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Over three decades, her work has helped answer complex research questions, supported clinical care and strengthened the hospital's reputation as a leader in cancer research.
One of Madhu's most significant achievements came in 2011, when she developed and published a method to measure levels of Mitotane, a drug used to treat the rare and aggressive cancer adrenocortical carcinoma. As Mitotane can build up in the body and cause serious toxicity, careful therapeutic drug monitoring is critical to ensuring patients receive the right dose safely and effectively.
For many years,
Calvary Mater Newcastle was the only research team in the Southern Hemisphere providing this specialised analysis, with samples arriving from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The impact of Madhu's work continues to be felt well beyond the walls of the Mater. More recently, an Italian company adapted her method into a commercial testing kit, making the technology accessible to laboratories around the world. Following her retirement, the service will continue locally through NSW Health Pathology at John Hunter Hospital.
Chief Hospital Scientist Jennette Sakoff said Madhu's contribution to cancer research has been extraordinary.

Jennette said Madhu's work had also played a key role in building research capability at Calvary Mater Newcastle.
"Madhu's work has underpinned numerous research projects, fostered important collaborations and strengthened the research capacity and reputation of Calvary Mater Newcastle."
While her scientific achievements are remarkable, colleagues will also remember Madhu for her generosity, professionalism and unwavering commitment to excellence.
After more than three decades of service, Madhu is looking forward to some well-earned holidays and long service leave before officially retiring.
