As a specialist palliative care service and a Statewide PND Service, one of Calvary Health Care Bethlehem’s key roles is to build the capacity of health services and health professionals to better manage the needs of people living with a life limiting illness.
We do this through the delivery of workshops, in-person and online training and online discussions throughout the year. Below are some of the key events planned for this year.

PEPA sessions
Palliative Care for GP’s, including pain and symptom management at end of life
Are you a GP in Victoria? Do you have an interest in palliative and end of life care? If so, you are invited to join us in an interactive online workshop about palliative care in general practice.

Bereavement Support Group
A 7 week, free program for people who have cared for someone who died in the last 12 months.
Our online bereavement program offers you the opportunity to learn about grief, discover your strengths, build resilience, and connect with others going through a similar experience.
Group sessions run periodically throughout the year.

MND “Ask the experts” PND Series
Capacity building workshops
The motor neurone disease workshops conducted every year by our allied health professionals, are practical team-based workshops for health and disability sector staff, which provide participants with an opportunity to interact and exchange views around the common presentations, interventions, equipment and technology that are used in the care of people living with progressive neurological disease.
Our preference is to run themed practical sessions to provide an opportunity to discuss specific clinical approaches in more detail and give attendees hands on exposure to specialised equipment and technologies.

This commitment to the right service, in the right place at the right time, also drives the Statewide PND service commitment to research, ensuring that education provided has a sound evidence base.
Courses and workshops
Progressive neurological diseases (PND)
A key role of the Statewide Progressive Neurological Disease (PND) Service, in collaboration with community organisations like MND Victoria, is to build the capacity of health services and health professionals to better manage the needs of people living with MND.
The Statewide PND Service at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem offers a range of interdisciplinary assessment, management and education services for people with a diagnosed PND.
PND services include but are not limited to: Huntington’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, multiple system atrophy, Parkinson’s disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, spinocerebellar ataxias and others.
Each of these conditions is relatively rare, and as a result community based health care services and clinicians may see very few people with these conditions in their daily practice.
