In the event of an emergency, accident, injury illness, the Calvary 24/7 Care Emergency Department can provide immediate care and treatment. Milne Ward, on level 9 consists of 33 medical beds. Our nurses are dedicated, caring and focused on delivering excellent nursing care to our patients. Inpatient services are provided on McCann Ward (Level 7).
Our facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, large and small gym, group therapy room and outdoor mobility garden.
Clinical psychologists treat emotional distress by providing psychological counselling using specific counselling approaches for various problems or conditions supported by evidence-based practice.
The clinical psychology services offer psychological counselling to help cope with the emotional and behavioural effects of short-term and long-term neurological, cardiac and other medical conditions as well as pre-existing emotional difficulties. This includes treatment of:

The Diabetes Service provides education to assist patients to make informed lifestyle choices. The service encourages and enables patients with diabetes to take control of their own condition by integrating self-management into their daily lives.
The diabetes service aims to:
- Provide support to patients with diabetes by facilitating skills that are patient centred, tailored and relevant to the individual and treatment goals.
- Strengthen motivation though empowerment assisting the patient to make informed decisions.
- Strengthen motivation to minimise cardiovascular risk factors, hypertension, hyperglycemia, obesity and dyslipidemia.
- Encouraging clients to work with their general practitioner to provide self-management options that can help them manage their diabetes by addressing specific risk factors, slowing the progression of their diabetes.
The diabetes service is available to patients who require assessment of and/or treatment for any of the following issues:
- Newly diagnosed type II diabetes

The dietetics department provides a service to all patients admitted to the hospital. On admission, a nutrition screening tool is used by the nursing staff to identify and refer patients who are at risk of malnutrition to the dietician.
Early identification can help us to assist you to optimise your nutritional status and maximise your level of participation in the rehabilitation program.
Treatment options can include the provision of nutritional supplements and/or modification to your diet as needed.
Information and education will be provided to assist you in maintaining and improving your nutrition during the course of your admission and on discharge.
Our service aims to:
- Identify any special requirements in relation to food and fluid intakes
- Support all nutritional needs including medical, preference and religious requirements
- Reduce complications and illness associated with your condition with dietetic intervention

Patients attending Calvary Adelaide Hospital McCann Ward as an inpatient will receive occupational therapy to maximise their level of independence and safety in the completion of activities of daily living including personal, domestic and work or leisure activities. Patients will be taught coping strategies to manage activities of daily living. These may include education on techniques to save energy, self-monitoring, falls prevention, stress management and relaxation and individualised treatment interventions relevant to your condition.
Occupational therapy services are provided within inpatient and outpatient programs. These are delivered in various formats including individual treatment sessions and groups.
Occupational therapy aims:
- Effectively enable you to complete your required activities of daily living both physically and cognitively
- Ensure safe access to your home environment by minimising environmental hazards and prescribing appropriate equipment and modifications

Calvary Adelaide Hospital provides physiotherapy services for inpatients of McCann Ward, and ambulatory program clients.
You will receive an individualised treatment program addressing your specific needs. Each program may include one-to-one sessions, small group/circuit classes and/or hydrotherapy. You may be provided with exercises to undertake between therapy sessions and you are encouraged to complete these to aid your recovery.
Physiotherapy program aims
- Optimise functional mobility, including bed mobility, transfers, walking/wheelchair skills, through individualised assessment and treatment
- Improve joint range of movement and muscle strength and control required to assist mobility and activities of daily living

Calvary Adelaide Hospital provides a speech pathology service that operates Monday to Friday for inpatients of McCann Ward and ambulatory patients. Patients are referred to the service if they require assessment of and/or treatment for any of the following issues:
- Swallowing difficulties
- Slurred speech
- Problems understanding spoken instructions or messages
- Difficulty thinking of words or expressing thoughts and feelings
- Recent problems with reading and writing
- Changes in voice production (e.g. hoarseness)
Assessment occurs promptly after the patient is referred to the Speech Pathologist. The frequency of therapy is determined following assessment. Daily therapy is available, if required. Education and support is provided to close family members throughout the treatment process. Therapy sessions take place in the patient’s room or the Speech Pathology office and exercises may be left for the patient to complete between sessions. Interpreter services are available when required.
The Speech pathology program aims to:
- Ensure the patient is able to swallow food and fluids safely
- Ensure all staff and family members involved in the patient’s care are informed about management of the swallowing difficulties
- Provide a detailed assessment of a patient’s speech and language
- Ensure all staff and family members are educated regarding maximising communication with the patient
- Provide interventions to achieve maximum improvement in the patient’s swallowing and speech and language status

Ambulatory rehabilitation services
Outpatient rehabilitation services are provided on McCann Ward, located on Level 7.
Our facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, large and small gym, group therapy room and outdoor mobility garden.
The Balance and Reconditioning Program is specifically designed to assist you in reducing the risk of falls and improving balance, by using exercises to increase muscle strength, endurance and balance specific training. Making changes to lifestyle, behaviours, health issues and home environment are also encouraged to maintain independence and reduce falls risks.
The program includes a thorough multidisciplinary assessment including a medical specialist assessment. The Balance and reconditioning program is held over eight weeks, twice a week, for 1.5 hours with an exercise and an education component. Goal setting is also emphasised to ensure improvements are achieved and maintained.
The sessions are conducted by a team of health professionals including a medical geriatrician, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, psychology and pharmacy.

The program is designed for women who are undertaking adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer, but is also suitable for other women with breast cancer.
Recent research on exercise during cancer treatment suggests that physical activity can help to reduce the severity of some treatment side effects including fatigue, anaemia (low red blood cell count), increased body weight and muscle mass deterioration.
There is also emerging evidence that exercise during your chemotherapy treatment can assist with chemotherapy completion rates and potentially improve outcomes in regards to the likelihood of cancer returning.
Exercise is now being recognised as a therapeutic strategy to potentially delay the recurrence or growth of your cancer. Studies have shown that exercise improves blood flow to the area of your cancer, improving the delivery of chemotherapy to cancer cells. Exercise can also reduce inflammation within your body that may have a role in driving cancer growth and improve the action of your own immune system to help destroy any remaining cancer cells.
What does the program involve?
The program is supervised by Physiotherapists and consists of an hour of working at moderate to vigorous intensity. This is followed by meditation facilitated by a Clinical Psychologist.
Assessment
Prior to commencing the exercise classes you will undergo an individualised assessment with a Rehabilitation Physician, Physiotherapist and Clinical Psychologist. Achievable goals are established and an individualised exercise program is developed by the Physiotherapist.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, is a secondary prevention program that is designed to optimise healthy behaviours, to limit the physical and emotional impact of cardiac disease, control cardiac symptoms and reduce the risk of further cardiac events.
Prior to commencement of the program a comprehensive risk factor assessment is conducted and an individualised exercise program. The program is held over six weeks, twice a week, for two hours encompassing warm-up, aerobic work and aerobic conditioning apparatus. The education sessions are conducted by a team of health professionals including a cardiologist, cardiac nurse, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, psychology and pharmacy.

A specialist clinic for assessment for return to driving, vehicle modifications and/or safety in continuing to drive due to medical conditions.
We have two rehabilitation specialists involved in the clinic who can provide medical clearance for driving and refer to our Occupational Therapist if required.
Occupational Therapy Driving assessments involve:
- An off road assessment looking at physical, visual and cognitive skills required for driving.
- A practical assessment with a driving instructor and the Occupational Therapist to determine the impact of the medical condition on the person’s ability to drive and to trial vehicle modifications if required.
- Recommendations are then made back to the medical specialist who will report to the Department of planning, transport and infrastructure.

The reconditioning oncology program assists people undergoing treatment for cancer to improve their functional ability and quality of life through a program of exercise, education, social support and meditation. The services enables an individual therapy needs to be met in the one location in a goal-directed, highly efficient and well co-ordinated manner.
This program is held over eight weeks, twice a week, for two hours with both an exercise and education or meditation component. The sessions are conducted by a team of health professionals including occupational therapy, nursing, physiotherapy, medical dietetics, psychology and pharmacy.

The Calvary Life Stories Program is a compassionate, person-centred service that helps people reflect on their lives and preserve meaningful memories, messages and stories.
Through supportive one-on-one sessions, trained volunteers listen, record and help shape each participant’s story in their own words, creating a lasting keepsake for loved ones to treasure.

Dietitian services educate and advise a wide range of patients on how therapeutic diets and dietary therapy can improve the management of their conditions e.g. for diabetes, bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal conditions and cardiac health.
At Calvary Adelaide Hospital our Dietitians will work with you to create an individual treatment plan, and will advise the catering department about specific dietary requirements.

This means you can maintain your independence while receiving necessary care in the comfort of your own home.
Occupational therapy helps people take part in everyday activities. Occupational therapists help to modify your environment, provide adaptive equipment and explore different ways to complete activities.
During your inpatient stay at Calvary Adelaide Hospital you may be referred to an Occupational therapist who can assist with a wide range of conditions including:
- Palliative care
- Post-orthopaedic surgery
- Progressive neurological conditions
- Recovery from multi-trauma
- Rehabilitation
- Stroke rehabilitation
Our Occupational Therapists are focussed on helping you maintain your independence, mobility and safety. We’ll look at your home and work with you and your family to find the right equipment and suggest minor modifications to make life easier.
Occupational Therapists can also organise for minor work to be completed and can give you access to any necessary equipment.

Pastoral care is integral to bringing healing and wellness as part of our person-centred, holistic model of care.
The spiritual domain of care is considered an important component of clinical care which contributes to improved health outcomes and enhanced patient experience.
Pastoral care workers work alongside physicians, nurses, therapists and other staff to provide a complete approach to healing.
Pastoral care can help if you are:
- Emotionally distressed
- Struggling with a sense of purpose or meaning
- Experiencing a time of crisis
- Feeling lonely or isolated
- Grieving a loss
- Adjusting to changes in your situation
- Making important decisions
- Needing support with your religious/spiritual practice
- Wishing to contact a priest or minister of religion
Our pastoral care service is available from
Pastoral care staff do regular rounds in the hospital. You can request a visit from a pastoral care team member by speaking to any staff member, who will be happy to assist.
Pastoral visitors visit regularly from Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and Jehovah’s Witness denominations. Your own Parish Priest, Pastor, Rabbi or Spiritual caregiver can be contacted at your request.
Catholic Holy Communion is available Monday to Friday. We also endeavour to ensure that Catholic Holy Communion is available on Sundays, a service made possible by volunteer Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

At Calvary Adelaide Hospital we have an in-hospital pharmacy, managed by HPS Pharmacies.
HPS stocks a large range of medications. In some cases we also provide more specialised and investigational medications (medicines that are being studied but not yet approved).
HPS provides medications for both hospital patients and a prescription service to the public, it is located on the ground floor behind Reception.
Please note: It’s important that patients bring their current medications and prescriptions when they are admitted to hospital.

Physiotherapists assess and develop programs to improve a patient’s strength, mobility, movement and function. Our team offer advice on personal mobility and safety in both individual and group sessions.
Physiotherapy program aims
- Optimise functional mobility, including bed mobility, transfers, walking/wheelchair skills, through individualised assessment and treatment
- Manage respiratory conditions
- Improve joint range of movement and muscle strength and control required to assist mobility and activities of daily living
- Enhance self-confidence and coping strategies
- Educate you in regards to community supports and services
- Reduce admission and readmission to hospital, optimise quality of life and independence
At Calvary Adelaide Hospital, while on the acute wards, physiotherapy is provided to inpatients on referral.

At Calvary Adelaide Hospital we offer the following range of diagnostic services.
The angiography unit at Calvary Adelaide Hospital provides Angiography services to our patients utilising state of the art equipment and highly skilled staff.
Angiograms are tests performed by our team of cardiologists. They provide detailed images of the coronary structure, and help our team deliver a faster and more accurate diagnosis. Angiograms are performed as part of the treatment for heart disease and heart attacks, and are carried out in our Cardiovascular Angiography Unit on Level 4.

Endoscopy is a general term covering any procedure that involves examining the interior of the body with an endoscope. Calvary Adelaide Hospital has a specialist team that uses cutting-edge technology to carry out all endoscopic treatments.
Endoscopy can be used in the following procedures
- Bronchoscopy (examination of the lungs)
- Colonoscopy (examination of the large bowel)
- Cystoscopy (examination of cysts)
- Endoanal ultrasounds (examination of your anal canal)
- ECTT (examination of pancreatic ducts, bile duct, gall bladder and liver ducts)
- Gastroscopy (examination of the stomach)
- Oesophageal manometry (examination of the throat)
Please note:
- Endoscopy is carried out under anaesthesia, which means you won’t be able to drive home after your procedure.
- You’ll receive instruction from your GP about preparing for your endoscopy. Please follow them carefully.
