Preserving memories. Honouring lives. Sharing stories.

Calvary Life Stories Program

At Calvary we believe every life creates a legacy and every story deserves to be remembered.

The Calvary Life Stories Program gives people in palliative care, aged care, and community settings the chance to reflect on their lives and capture meaningful memories, messages, and reflections. This service supports individuals to tell their story in their own words — a powerful process that affirms dignity, connection, and legacy.

What is the Calvary Life Stories Program?

The program offers a safe, supportive space for individuals to share the moments that have shaped their life — from treasured family traditions to personal reflections and values. Trained volunteers work one‑on‑one with participants over a series of confidential sessions to listen, record, and help craft a written life story that reflects the person’s own voice.

These stories can include:

  • Significant life milestones

  • Messages or letters to loved ones

  • Poems, memories, favourite recipes or cultural traditions

  • Reflections on life, love, and family

Once complete, families receive a lasting keepsake to cherish for years to come.

Why life storytelling matters

Sharing life stories helps people reflect on what matters most while strengthening emotional connection with loved ones. Participants often describe the experience as empowering and comforting. One participant shared:

“You put in the effort and without you I couldn’t have told this story… it has become a blessing — for you, for me and for many others along the way.”

How the Program works

  1. Referral or expression of interest - Calvary patients, residents, or community members can access the program through their care team or by contacting the program directly.

  2. One‑on‑one recording sessions - Volunteers meet over multiple sessions to listen deeply, record stories, and support the individual to share memories at their own pace.

  3. Story crafting and editing - The volunteer carefully transcribes and shapes the narrative with the participant’s input, ensuring the final story remains authentic and personal.

  4. Keepsake creation - A treasured memento is produced for the individual and their family — celebrating the richness of a life lived.
