140 years of compassion

It all began in 1885, when six courageous Sisters of the Little Company of Mary arrived in Sydney after a seven-week voyage from Europe. They came from different walks of life, united by a single purpose: to care for the sick, the dying, and the vulnerable.

Their journey aboard the S.S. Liguria was marked by prayer, perseverance, and storms. When they arrived at Port Jackson, they were welcomed by a crowd of Irish Australians and began their Mission in humble, temporary homes, including one described as a “decaying building.” Within a year, they had welcomed new postulants, laid the foundation for their convent, and opened the Children’s Hospital of the Holy Child.

Earlier this year, the family of a Calvary Springvale Aged Care home resident donated $7,000 to honour the compassionate care their loved one received.

Their gift funded a NeuronsVR headset, an innovative virtual reality system that lets residents enjoy immersive experiences such as travel, nature, and adventure.  This thoughtful donation enhances wellbeing, especially for residents with mobility or cognitive challenges, creating moments of joy and calm.

We are deeply grateful to this incredible family for turning gratitude into generosity and bringing comfort and inspiration to so many.

The transformation of Calvary Cooinda Aged Care home’s outdoor spaces is underway, made possible by the incredible generosity of the Singleton community.

What began as a simple walking path has grown into a $155,000 vision for 400 metres of accessible paths, raised garden beds, native plants, a chicken coop, and shaded areas for relaxation.

Funding so far has come from Singleton Districts Op Shop, Club Singleton, the Council’s Enriching Local Area Grant, and many individual donors who gave from the heart. Thanks to this ongoing community support, the garden will soon become a safe, accessible and welcoming space that promotes wellbeing, independence, and joy for all residents.
