The Aged Care Act 2024
Changes coming to Aged Care
The Australian Government announced a delay in introducing the new Aged Care Act until 1 November 2025. The new legislation marks a significant step forward in improving aged care across Australia.
The new Act aims to ensure that people who access aged care services funded by the Australian Government are treated with respect and have the quality of life they deserve.
The Strengthened Quality Standards, also commencing on 1 November 2025, will support all aged care providers to deliver person-centred, high-quality care and to continuously strive for best practice.

Statement of Rights
The new Aged Care Act includes a Statement of Rights, which replaces the existing Charter of Rights. It outlines the rights that older people should expect when seeking or accessing government-funded aged care services. This is designed to ensure that older people and their needs continue to be at the centre of the aged care system.
All Calvary Residential Aged Care Homes and Home Care Service Centres should have this poster erected in a visible location for anyone entering the home.
Decision making and registered supporters
The new Aged Care Act recognises that every older person is presumed to have the ability to make their own decisions. Any authorised or regular representatives recorded in My Aged Care, will automatically become the registered supporter under the new system from 1 November 2025, unless they have opted out.
