In recognition of Men’s Health Week, Calvary Mater Newcastle is encouraging men across the Hunter to take a proactive approach to their health and wellbeing through a free community information event.
On Wednesday, 24 June, Calvary Mater Newcastle will host a dedicated Men’s Health Night at Club Charlestown from 5:30pm, featuring presentations from a range of healthcare professionals and guest speakers talking all things ‘men’s health’.
Calvary Mater Newcastle Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Nancy Consoli, said a range of topics will be covered including Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing guidelines, heart health, mental health, bowel cancer, exercise and alcohol, drugs and long-term health.
“Men’s Health Week shines a spotlight on the importance of checking in, both physically and mentally,” Ms Consoli said.
“Too often, men delay seeking help or ignore early warning signs. This free event is designed to encourage open conversations, promote preventative health, and empower men to take positive steps towards their overall wellbeing.”
Ms Consoli said understanding PSA testing and prostate cancer risk is an important part of men's preventative health.
Calvary Mater Newcastle Radiation Oncologist, Dr Sam Dickson, who will speak about PSA testing guidelines at the event, highlighted the importance of appropriate PSA screening.
“Prostate cancer can be treated in a range of ways, depending on the severity of the disease. We also know that some prostate cancers are very slow-growing and may never require treatment.
“Guideline-based PSA screening can help detect prostate cancer at an earlier stage in people who are likely to benefit from treatment, while also helping to avoid unnecessary intervention for those whose cancer may not require active treatment.”
Alongside the talks, attendees will have access to a range of information stands and health resources will be available throughout the evening.
This free community event is for men of all ages. It also welcomes the partners, families, and friends who support them, and will feature trusted health professionals, sharing practical, easy-to-understand information and advice.
This event is sponsored by Skillsons Constructions Pty Ltd and Club Charlestown.
