Mini golf, Nerf games, caricature portraits and a trip to kindergarten might not seem like the most obvious combination of activities, but they're all part of how
Calvary Aged Care communities are celebrating Grandparents Day.
For many of us, grandparents hold a special place in our lives. They're storytellers, teachers, carers, confidants and sometimes our biggest supporters. While every family and every relationship is different, the connections between generations can leave a lasting impression.
Grandparents Day isn't only about looking back on the memories we've made together. It's also about making new ones, spending time with the people we love and having a little fun along the way.
With Grandparents Day falling on Sunday 25 October, Calvary communities have been marking the occasion with activities that bring residents, families and younger generations together.
Games and portraits at Calvary The Homestead
Residents at
Calvary The Homestead in Walkley Heights, South Australia, had plenty to keep them entertained during their Grandparents Day celebrations.
The home organised an afternoon of activities, including mini golf, ten-pin bowling, Nerf games, archery, soccer and hockey, along with a lolly bar.
A visiting caricature artist was another highlight, drawing portraits for residents to take home.
For those whose grandchildren couldn't attend, the artist was also happy to create drawings from photographs of their grandchildren.
It was the first time the home had organised something like this, and everyone who took part went home with their own drawing, whether to frame and display or perhaps give as a Christmas present.
Calvary Scottvale residents visit local kindergarten
In Victoria, residents from
Calvary Scottvale in Dandenong headed to Nagalambi Kindergarten in Noble Park on 20 October for a different kind of Grandparents Day celebration.
The visit included afternoon tea and colouring activities for residents and children to enjoy together.
Residents also brought along colouring pencils and activities as gifts for the children.
While children had visited Scottvale before, this was the first time residents had made the trip to a childcare centre.
The outing gave residents the opportunity to spend time with children of different ages, from babies through to older children, and see them playing and learning in their own environment.
Celebrating grandparents and the people who make a difference
Whether it's a game of mini golf, a portrait to treasure or an afternoon spent with children, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the relationships between generations.
This Grandparents Day, Calvary recognises the grandparents, great-grandparents and grandparent figures among our residents, clients and employees, and thanks them for the love, care and experiences they share with those around them.
