Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital welcomes new midwifery Nurse Educators

The Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital nursing alumni, both with young families, are job-sharing the full-time role, which oversees the ongoing training and education of midwives. This includes the growing cohort of newly-recruited midwives supporting the expanded private maternity service.
“We are both very fortunate that when we applied for the role and found the other was applying that Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital Nursing Unit Manager Women’s Health, Sally Jarvis, was open to the role being a job share,” Ms Kuresa said.
“I trained and worked at Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital for two years before studying midwifery and then worked in the public health system for 12 years,” she said.
“It feels like coming home and this role is a fantastic opportunity with lots of changes underway. I’m really excited about the transition.”
Similarly, Ms Arnold trained as a nurse, first working at Calvary St John's Hospital Rehab Unit, followed by a six-month stint in the Emergency Department.
“I actually helped birth a baby in a car park and knew from then I wanted to become a midwife,” Ms Arnold said.
“Both of us are very strongly influenced by the former Nurse Educator here at Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital. She was both inspirational and knowledgeable, with a fantastic mentor skillset, and she was great to be around.”
Having completed her midwifery training at Hobart Private Hospital, Ms Arnold knew she had the capabilities required for the new role.
“It helps that we are super passionate and dedicated to women's’ health. We love looking after women and involving them in every aspect of their care.
Self-described as ‘fun people’, both are adept at finishing the other’s sentences and having a good laugh together.
“We hope we will be good educators. We are both fair and firm and we want to uplift everyone we work with and make a difference with this role.” Ms Kuresa said.
To date, 12 new midwives have either transferred or been recruited to Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital, with further recruitment ongoing.
