Information classes

Our classes are optional but highly valuable—designed to give you the knowledge, confidence, and support you need during this exciting time. Whether you attend one or all, our goal is to ease any concerns and help you embrace every moment of your pregnancy journey.

Antenatal classes

Presented by experienced and skilled midwives who have a passion for education.

Topics covered include labour and birthing, pain relief and coping methods, variations (induction, caesarean section), baby care and going home.

Classes give couples the opportunity to meet other prospective parents and to ask questions if needed.

Breastfeeding classes

Presented by experienced midwives with lactation consultant certification.

These workshops are aimed at providing focused information and best practice guidelines to mothers in a supportive environment.

Classes can be booked via the maternity ward clerk who will contact individuals once their online booking is received.

Grandparent classes

An informal class providing information and guidelines across a range of topics, including:

  • A brief introduction to Calvary and tour of the unit

  • Update on labour, pain relief and birthing

  • Breast feeding support

  • Safety – childproofing homes, safe sleeping, choking and resuscitation

  • Options for nappies and environmental impact

  • Postnatal depression

Information to know before your stay

Tours of the maternity unit are available when attending antenatal classes. If you would like to arrange a tour prior to this, please phone the maternity unit ward clerk on 08 8239 9146 between 8 am and 4 pm, Monday to Friday.

We want to ensure your stay with Calvary North Adelaide Hospital is as comfortable as possible. Our accommodation is spacious enough for a partner or support person to stay as well, and all rooms have ensuite bathrooms. When available we offer a choice of double bedrooms, and some of our rooms have spectacular views of North Adelaide and the city. Please note that the allocation of rooms is subject to availability, planned method of delivery, and the outcome of labour.

In addition to our general patient menu, we also offer a bespoke maternity menu, which includes delicious options that can be delivered to the maternity unit or patient room outside of normal meal times. This flexibility ensure that new mothers and their support person can enjoy a nutritious meal or snack whatever time they may need it.

To assist you in the preparation of your hospital stay we encourage you to contact your health fund provider to determine the level of cover you have and any excess payments that may apply. You may also wish to ask them about appropriate health cover for your baby/babies in the event they need to be admitted into our Special Care Nursery.

Your private hospital health insurance will cover the following for obstetric care:

  • Accommodation fee

  • Nursing care

  • Labour ward and theatre fee

  • Antenatal classes

We can arrange for self-funding patients to obtain a quote from our Accounts department which must be paid in full before admission. Please phone 08 8239 9236 or 08 8239 9138 to discuss.

Additional fees may apply for the following services:

  • Antenatal classes for self-insured patients

  • CTG monitoring (if required)

  • Overnight boarding fee for a support person that wishes to stay with you whilst you are in hospital

  • Special Care Nursery: you will need to contact your health fund to arrange appropriate health cover for your baby/babies in the event they need to be admitted into our Special Care Nursery. Your baby’s treatment will not be covered by your health fund if your policy is for ‘singles cover’ only. In the event you have a multiple pregnancy, the second baby will be invoiced with a separate individual account.

  • Post-natal clinics after discharge from hospital

Specialists’ fees

Health funds do not cover all of the Obstetrician’s or Paediatrician’s fees, so you will receive a separate account from their practice. The amount will depend on the individual fees of that specialist.

If you require an Anaesthetist they will also send you a separate account.
