Calvary North Adelaide Hospital has a 24 hour Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staffed by specialist intensivists who provide expert support for adults if required. The onsite ICU means that mothers and babies are less likely to be separated if the mother requires specialised care.
You can relax knowing our specialist teams are here to support you and your baby to receive the very best care 24 hours a day.
At Calvary North Adelaide Hospital, our Level 5 Special care nursery is specially equipped to provide expert care for newborns who need extra support, including babies born from 32 weeks gestation and beyond.
Our nursery is equipped to operate 24/7 and offers comprehensive care for babies requiring:
Oxygen therapy for breathing support
IV antibiotics and IV therapy, blood investigations
Feeding support: including feeding tubes (NGT) or IV fluids
Phototherapy for jaundice management
Support for growing premature babies (32 weeks gestation and above), including lactation consultants available on site to assist with the establishment of breastfeeding, should you require this service.
Level 5 care is ideal for babies who are medically stable but need extra monitoring and support to thrive. It provides advanced care above a standard nursery to help your baby grow safely and comfortably.
Your baby will be cared for by a paediatrician of your choice, working closely with our experienced midwives to ensure your newborn receives personalised attention and support every step of the way.
Having a Level 5 special care nursery also means that mother and baby are less likely to be separated if the baby requires specialised care.

Our history
The first recorded birth at Calvary North Adelaide Hospital was in 1902, just two years after it was founded. The Maternity Ward as it is seen today was constructed in 1940 and it is from this date that the number of births in the hospital is referenced.
We look to the future and beyond, as we continue to service the needs of the community with care and compassion and hold true to the core values on which we are founded.
