Course overview

Key topics include: spirituality and religion, introduction to listening skills, needs and attitudes, self disclosure and boundaries, rituals, grief and loss and self-care.

At the end of the course students will be able to:

Identify the scope and boundaries of the pastoral role
Define the role of pastoral care
Demonstrate a capacity for reflective pastoral practice
Articulate their motivation as pastoral carers
Demonstrate an awareness of how they relate with others
Begin the process of reflecting theologically/spiritually

Course overview

Key topics include: action/ reflection, boundaries, empathy, spiritual reflection, listening, validation and invalidation, silence, documentation, death and dying, aged care and dementia.

At the end of the course students will be able to:

Reflect critically on the relational dynamics occurring in pastoral conversations
Demonstrate a capacity to use a variety of pastoral interventions, including active listening and empathy
Articulate and work within the boundaries of their pastoral role
Evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of methods of theological/spiritual reflection
Demonstrate an integration of their theological/spiritual beliefs with their ministry practice
