Adelaide Obesity Surgery provides a comprehensive bariatric service onsite, and aim to be a step ahead in innovative weight loss surgery to deliver best possible outcomes for our patients. They are a highly-experienced, industry-leading private clinic and offer patients personalised service and support, with a holistic approach to health and well-being.

They are unique in that they offer a full bariatric team under the one roof. All the support and services that you need are available at one location. They offer Skype or phone consults for patients in remote access areas or where travel may be an issue.

Cardiology is the study and treatment of heart disorders. It involves treating all areas related to the heart and arteries, including tests, angioplasty and heart surgery.

Cardiac services are provided 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The hospital prides itself on providing a Cardiac Centre of Excellence unparalleled in the South Australian private sector, there when you need it – 24 hours a day.

In the event of an emergency such as chest pain, patients can access the Wakefield Emergency Department who will arrange for specialist treatment and admission as required.

At Calvary Wakefield Hospital, the Wakefield Emergency Department is open 24/7, including all public holidays. Medical emergencies are situations that are too serious or urgent to be treated by your General Practitioner (GP) and can include:

  • Breathing difficulty
  • Chest pain
  • Major accident
  • Sudden collapse
  • Uncontrollable bleeding

In the event of an emergency, accident, injury illness, the Wakefield Emergency Department can provide immediate care and treatment. It is the only private emergency department in Adelaide that is open 24 hours a day and is staffed with specialist doctors and nurses who have access to the latest in medical equipment. Any patient attending the Wakefield Emergency Department has full access and referral to a team of medical and surgical specialists plus the full range of specialised services offered by Calvary Wakefield Hospital.

Lyon and Jay ward, combined, consists of 30 Medical beds. Our nurses are dedicated, caring and focused on delivering excellent nursing care to our patients. We endeavor and strive to identify patients individual health care needs and discharge goals and together with Physicians and the Allied health care team, work in reaching these goals. Specialty areas include but are not limited to:

The Calvary Wakefield Hospital pre-admission service provides patients with information and support to facilitate admission to hospital. Our team can also assist with information and options for care post-discharge.

How it works

One of our dedicated patient services officers will contact you prior to your admission to hospital to:

  • Discuss your care before and after surgery
  • Check your health history and complete other admission paperwork
  • Provide you with any necessary pre-operative instructions
  • Check you have had any tests ordered by your Doctor
  • Commence discharge planning to help plan for your return home
  • Answer any questions you may have

On most occasions, this will be a telephone appointment, however in some cases you may be required to attend a face to face appointment at the hospital.

At Calvary Wakefield we offer Surgical procedures for patients requiring either day surgery or overnight stay. We provide specialised acute level surgery for various specialties, all supported by our Level 3 Intensive Care Unit.

Calvary Wakefield Hospital has two day surgery suites, one located within the main hospital, and the other at the Calvary Wakefield Surgicentre, located across the road. The kind of surgery a patient undergoes determines which day surgery suite they visit.

Across both sites, our nursing staff have the experience and understanding to ensure the best possible outcome for each patient. Highly skilled visiting specialists are an integral part of our professional team dedicated to providing safe, high quality care.

Dietician Services helps with areas such as weight management, education, checking nutritional levels, meal planning, promoting healthy eating and supporting people having bariatric surgery.

If you’re a patient at Calvary Wakefield Hospital, our Dieticians will collaborate with our in-house chefs to ensure your meals are appetising, delicious, and meet your specific dietary needs.

When visiting the hospital

If you have a planned admission to Calvary Wakefield Hospital you will have the opportunity to describe your disability and appropriate arrangements can be included in your admission process.

During your admission members of our Occupational Therapy and other allied health services may join the team providing your care. Your team will talk with you about interim or long-term services to assist with any temporary disability or enduring issues arising from your treatment or pre-existing condition.


 Referrals will be provided to agencies that can assist with disability support services.


Disability support at home

Calvary Community Care provides a range of disability services in the home. We support disabled children, adults and older people to be as independent as possible and become actively involved in their local community.

Calvary Community Care can also help with managing Individual Support Package (ISP) and funding allocations

Calvary Community Care

Calvary Community Care’s Hospital to Home Service can be provided under a government subsidised support package (if you’re eligible), delivered on a private basis, or as a combination of the two.

Calvary Community Care can help with everyday tasks to help you recover safely and quickly. It is also useful to consider Community Care services if you have carer, who may not be able to safely move or bathe you; may need a break; or may need time away from home to do other things. Calvary Community Care Services include:

  • Transport to and from hospital appointments and for everyday tasks
  • Cooking and grocery shopping
  • Dressing and showering
  • Cleaning and household maintenance

Occupational Therapy helps people take part in everyday activities. Occupational Therapists help to modify your environment, provide adaptive equipment and explore different ways to complete activities.
At Calvary Wakefield Hospital we may refer you to an Occupational Therapist  who can assist with a wide range of conditions including:

  • Palliative care
  • Post-orthopaedic surgery
  • Progressive neurological conditions
  • Recovery from multi-trauma
  • Rehabilitation
  • Stroke rehabilitation

Our Occupational Therapists are focussed on helping you maintain your independence, mobility and safety. We’ll look at your home and work with you and your family to find the right equipment and suggest minor modifications to make life easier.

Occupational Therapists can also organise for minor work to be completed and can give you access to any necessary equipment. All equipment can be trialled, borrowed and purchased.

At Calvary Wakefield Hospital we offer compassionate emotional support and spiritual care for you, your family and friends. Our Pastoral Care Service acknowledges your beliefs, important relationships and all that is meaningful for you. It affirms your intrinsic value as a person.

Pastoral Care can help if you are:

  • Struggling with a sense of purpose or meaning
  • Experiencing a time of crisis
  • Feeling lonely or isolated

At Calvary Wakefield Hospital we have an in-hospital pharmacy, managed by HPS Pharmacies.

Our Pharmacy stocks a large range of medications. In some cases we also provide more specialised and investigational medications (medicines that are being studied but not yet approved).

The Pharmacy at Calvary Wakefield Hospital provides medications for both hospital patients and a  prescription service to the public.

Please note: It’s important that patients bring their current medications and prescriptions when they are admitted to hospital.

Physiotherapists assess and develop programs to improve a patient’s strength, mobility, movement and function. Our team offer advice on personal mobility and safety in both individual and group sessions.

Our Physiotherapy team can help with:

Respite care is provided as

  • nursing support for a patient when coming home from hospital
  • short term nursing care in or outside the home
  • a support service for carers. It provides time away from their carer role confident that their loved one is being looked after.

Calvary Community Care

Calvary Community Care provides a range of respite options available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services can be delivered in the home or a Support Worker can accompany the family member while the carer takes a break.

Speech pathology, also known as speech therapy, is the diagnosis, management and treatment of people who are unable to communicate effectively or suffer from the following issues:

  • Changes in voice production, such as hoarseness
  • Difficulty thinking of words or expressing thoughts and feelings
  • Problems understanding spoken instructions or messages
  • Recent problems with reading and writing
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Slurred speech

At Calvary Wakefield Hospital our Speech Pathologists help a variety of people who fail to develop normal communication or people who acquire communication issues as a result of disease, injury or stroke.

What to expect

When you are an inpatient at Calvary Wakefield Hospital you may need to be assessed. An individual treatment plan will then be created, and your sessions can take place in your hospital room.

Education and support is provided to you and your family members throughout the treatment process. Interpreter services are available on request.

Tests and Diagnostic Services

Diagnostic services cover a range of scans, x-rays and laboratory tests used by Specialists to determine the cause of an illness.

At Calvary Wakefield Hospital we offer the following range of diagnostic services.

The Angiography Unit at Calvary Wakefield Hospital provides Angiography services to our patients utilising state of the art equipment and highly skilled staff.

Angiograms are tests performed by our team of cardiologists. They provide detailed images of the coronary structure, and help our team deliver a faster and more accurate diagnosis. Angiograms are performed as part of the treatment for heart disease and heart attacks, and are carried out in our Cardiovascular Angiography Unit.

Endoscopy is a general term covering any procedure that involves examining the interior of the body with an endoscope. Calvary Wakefield Hospital has a specialist team that uses cutting-edge technology to carry out all endoscopic treatments.

Endoscopy can be used in the following procedures

  • Bronchoscopy (examination of the lungs)
  • Colonoscopy (examination of the large bowel)
  • Cystoscopy (examination of cysts)
  • Endoanal Ultrasounds  (examination of your anal canal)
  • ECTT (examination of pancreatic ducts, bile duct, gall bladder and liver ducts)
  • Gastroscopy (examination of the stomach)
  • Oesophageal Manometry (examination of the throat)

Please note:

  • Endoscopy is carried out under anaesthesia, which means you won’t be able to drive home after your procedure.
  • You’ll receive instruction from your GP about preparing for your endoscopy. Please follow them carefully.
