Statement from Calvary in respect of Dr Thao Ong

On 7 March 2020, Calvary suspended Dr Ong’s accreditation at all Calvary Hospitals in South Australia, pending an investigation by AHPRA of a Notification made by Calvary regarding 3 clinical incidents that occurred at Calvary Wakefield Hospital between September and December 2019 (AHPRA Notification).

Dr Ong did not accept that suspension was warranted. He responded to the AHPRA Notification, making a detailed submission to AHPRA on 11 May 2020.

On 13 August 2020, AHPRA gave notice to Calvary that it had completed its investigation and had decided to take no further action against Dr Ong regarding the AHPRA Notification (AHPRA decision).

On 25 August 2020, after receiving the AHPRA decision, Calvary gave notice to Dr Ong that Calvary had decided to revoke his suspension and reinstate Dr Ong’s credentialing and admitting privileges at all Calvary South Australia sites.

Calvary acknowledges that the AHPRA decision to take no further action against Dr Ong was the result of a careful investigation by AHPRA of all the circumstances surrounding the clinical incidents the subject of the AHPRA Notification.

In making the AHPRA Notification, Calvary was following the processes that were in place to preserve patient safety and ensure quality clinical care. However, Calvary acknowledges the distressing effect the suspension, complaint and investigation had on Dr Ong and his family.
