His Dad, Ken, is one of the lucky ones receiving a kidney transplant in 1986 following renal failure that forced him to be on dialysis three to four hours every three days.

The life-changing and life-saving kidney donation allowed Ken to witness both sons’ weddings, meet and watch his five grandchildren grow up, and celebrate 51 years with his wife and forever soulmate.

“I was only 14 when we got the call to say there was a kidney available for Dad. There was a lot of rushing around to make sure he could get to Sydney in time,” Andrew said.

“It was touch and go for a while there, but Dad did everything the doctors told him to do and he managed to have 32 extra years with us.”

Jersey Day raises awareness about organ and tissue donation, importantly encouraging people to register to be an organ donor.

To take part in this year’s Jersey Day, simply wear your favourite sporting jersey on Friday, 1 September.

“Jersey Day is, not about raising money, it is about encouraging people to register as an organ donor and it takes just two minutes to do,” Andrew said.

Thanks to Andrew, Calvary Riverina Hospital has been involved in Jersey Day since 2017.

“Last year about 50 staff at Calvary Riverina Hospital donned their favourite jersey and I’m expecting the same support again,” Andrew said.

Currently, there are 1,800 Australians waitlisted for an organ transplant and 14,000 additional people on dialysis who may need a kidney transplant.
