About this hospital

Calvary Riverina private hospital in Wagga Wagga, NSW, provides a range of services to the Riverina community including Calvary Riverina Surgicentre, our award winning Drug and Alcohol Centre, and maternity and women's health services.

We provide specialist palliative care for acute patients and, as a member of the Palliative Care Alliance, have established links with hospice and home-based community palliative services for both public and private patients.

With eight modern operating theatres across two campuses, Calvary Riverina Hospital provides both day and overnight surgical medical services and for more critically ill patients, we provide intensive care and coronary care.

The maternity and women’s health services offer five delivery suites and a special care nursery. Other modern, purpose-built facilities include an on-site hydrotherapy pool and gymnasium. Supporting Calvary Riverina on site is a cardiovascular laboratory, pathology services, medical imaging and cancer care services.

Calvary Riverina Hospital’s Drug and Alcohol Centre provides comprehensive in-patient detoxification services and rehabilitation programs.

O'Connor House & Chimney History

In 1944, the Little Company of Mary (LCM) opened a new multi-purpose building at the west end of the Calvary Riverina Hospital, then known as Lewisham Hospital. The building contained a boiler for the central heating of the hospital and a laundry, both connected to a tall brick chimney. The southern part of the building was used for nurses’ quarters.

In the 1970s, the boiler and laundry facilities were removed and the building refurbished to deliver drug and alcohol services. This was opened in 1978, and named O’Connor House after Mother Boniface O’Connor, who expanded LCM operations in Australia and NZ. She was Mother Superior at the hospital from 1941 to her passing in 1946.

In the 1980s, the drug and alcohol services separated, with O’Connor House focussing on alcohol addiction with a three-week detox program for in-patients. As the only program of its type in the region, it served a vital purpose to the local community. In 2013, O'Connor House was replaced by the Calvary Riverina Drug & Alchohol Centre, a purpose-built facility accommodating 30 clients and a range of support services.
