Take a peek inside the Riverland’s newest residential care home
1st September 2021
Residents, their families and the Berri and Riverland community have the opportunity for a sneak peek at the new Calvary St Catherine’s Retirement Community on Sunday, 12 September.
Calvary staff will be on hand to show people through the Riverland’s newest residential care home, with resident and family tours during the morning and community tours in the afternoon.
It will be a chance for the general community to tour the new facility before residents and staff move in on 21 September.
Interested members of the community can book their tour online via the Calvary St Catherine’s Retirement Community website at www.calvarystcatherines.org.au. Bookings open on 1 September and places are limited.
The new Calvary St Catherine’s Retirement Community will be the place to call home for 50 residents. Each will have their own room with a private ensuite. The single-storey facility includes a residents’ café with indoor and outdoor seating, gardens, recreational spaces, dining, lounge and entertainment areas.
Calvary’s General Manager for retirement communities in South Australia, Ryan Midgley, said Calvary has invested about $18 million to create a beautiful, spacious home for residents on the new McGilton Road site, and continues to support Berri’s families and older community. The new facility has been supported by a $900,000 grant from The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA).
“I know residents and staff alike are excited about moving into their new home,” Mr Midgley said.
“The new home provides contemporary living and has been purpose-built to support residents to ‘age in place’ and enhance their independence, social interactions, and health and overall wellbeing. It will also enable best practice care and support for members of our older community who may be living with varying levels of dementia.”
“We are really proud of the effort that our project team has put in to bring this development to completion, and that our Calvary St Catherine’s staff put in every day.”
Built around six distinct courtyards and set amid landscaped grounds, the new Calvary St Catherine’s is adjoined by the Berri Cottage Homes independent living units and the new Berri Medical Centre, which is under construction. Amongst other features, the home includes a spacious commercial kitchen and laundry, a central dining room, front reception area, and beautifully appointed corridors with memory boxes outside each room so residents can display treasured or important items and share memories.
St Catherine’s aged care home was established nearly 60 years ago in what was the original Berri hospital, and has been caring for the Berri and Riverland communities ever since.
Calvary took over management of the home in 2016 and construction of the new Calvary St Catherine’s Retirement Community began in 2020. A special photo montage and timeline in the main corridor will show the service’s heritage.
