Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service
This service provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
who are patients of Calvary.
When attending the hospital, please notify our staff that you are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. This information will be used to ensure that health professionals you are working with are aware of your cultural practices, or needs.
Operating hours
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Liaison Service operates Monday
to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm, except public holidays.
If you or your family need support when the Aboriginal Liaison Officer is not available, please ask to speak to a Nursing Unit Manager or a team leader who will be able assist you.

Hyson Green is the only private health facility in ACT, established in 1998 to provide patients with their choice of care as and when needed, in either a customised residential environment or outpatient setting.

Palliative Care focuses on supporting patients who have one or more chronic conditions, with intervention aimed at assisting those people to live complete and comfortable lives through symptom management and suitable treatment of their condition(s) as they progress to the need for end of life care.
The goal is to help patients achieve dignity, comfort and maximise the quality of life for the patient, family and loved ones.
Calvary Bruce Private Hospital provides inpatient palliative care services and works closely with Calvary’s Community Specialist palliative care services. Palliative care patients may be transferred to this service for ongoing palliative care through the outpatient clinic services, care in the home or residential setting, and also inpatient hospice services.
Our palliative care service is tailored to each patient, with the main objective being to enable each patient to enjoy a fulfilling and comfortable lifestyle while still receiving appropriate and patient-centred care.

The Calvary Bruce Private Hospital Pre-admission clinic is a service which provides patients scheduled for a procedure or surgery with information and support. Our goal is to assess your wellbeing and better understand your individual circumstances, and by doing so ensure you have a positive stay with us.
The Request for Admission provided by your referring doctor or specialist will determine whether you require a pre admission clinic appointment.
How it works
A staff member from the Pre-Admission clinic may contact you in advance of your admission to hospital to arrange an appointment time or a telephone consultation. At that time of the call we will:
- Discuss your care before and after surgery
- Check your health history and complete other admission paperwork
- Provide you with any necessary pre-operative instructions
- Check you have had any tests ordered by your doctor
- Commence discharge planning to help plan for your return home
- Answer any questions you may have

Calvary Bruce Private Hospital women’s health service specialises in breast surgery and gynaecology, and is committed to working in partnership to formulate treatment plans that conform to each patient’s preferred approach to their condition.
Our highly-qualified and experienced team of women’s health specialist comprises medical, nursing and allied health practitioners who take a holistic approach to women’s health and wellbeing.
These staff work across our critical care, surgical and medical departments.

Bereavement, mourning and grief are terms that are often used interchangeably. Bereavement is a normal and natural response when someone close to you has died. At Calvary we find many people benefit from specialist bereavement counselling services.
Our care teams and our pastoral care team comprise qualified professional and voluntary counsellors who provide support in a non-judgmental, safe and empathic environment.
The Calvary Bruce Private Hospital Bereavement Counselling Service is available to family and friends of patients.

Dietician services assist Calvary Bruce Private Hospital patients with weight management, education, checking nutritional levels, meal planning, promoting healthy eating and supporting before or after surgery.
Our specialist team of nutritionists and dieticians will work with you and your care team to create an individual treatment plan. There may be occasions when our Dieticians require you to be placed on a special diet. Patient meal choices are available for all diets.
We also provide educational resources to help you maintain your nutritional status both during your admission and after you leave.

This means you can maintain your independence while receiving necessary care in the comfort of your own home.
Occupational therapy helps people take part in everyday activities. Occupational therapists help to modify your environment, provide adaptive equipment and explore different therapies and services to help you complete and enjoy normal ‘life’ activities.
At Calvary Bruce Private Hospital our occupational therapists work as part of a multi-disciplinary team helping with a wide range of conditions including:

- Post-orthopaedic surgery
- Progressive neurological conditions
- Recovery from trauma

Our Occupational therapists are focussed on helping you maintain your independence, mobility and safety after you leave hospital. We’ll look at your home and work with you and your family to find the right equipment and suggest minor modifications to make life easier.
Occupational therapists can also organise for minor work to be completed and can give you access to any necessary equipment. All equipment can be trialed, borrowed and purchased.

We offer compassionate emotional support and spiritual care for you, your family and friends. Our pastoral care service acknowledges your beliefs, important relationships and all that is meaningful for you. It affirms your intrinsic value as a person.
Pastoral care can help if you are:
- Emotionally distressed
- Struggling with a sense of purpose or meaning
- Experiencing a time of crisis
- Feeling lonely or isolated
- Grieving a loss
- Making important decisions
- Needing support with your religious/spiritual practice
- Wishing to contact a priest or minister of religion

The Calvary Bruce Private Hospital pharmacy services are provided by HPS, pharmaceutical services are for Calvary patients only.
The Pharmacy does not provide a prescription service to the public. If you are a discharged patient you will be given a short course of medication to last until your follow up appointment with your GP or specialist, please note you may be invoiced from HPS directly. It is important that you organise a follow up appointment promptly so that you do not run out of medication.
Please note: It’s important that you bring your current medications and prescriptions if you have a planned admission to Calvary Bruce Private Hospital or arrive as an emergency patient.
How to access this service
The pharmacy is located on the ground floor and is available to hospital patients only.
Physiotherapists assess and develop programs to improve a patient’s strength, mobility, movement and function. Our team offer advice on personal mobility and safety in both individual and group sessions.
Our physiotherapy service often becomes a part of the treatment team for both emergency patients and patients with a planned admission. The physiotherapy team will work closely with your medical and nursing teams to determine a suitable program of movement and activity to assist your wellbeing and to aid your recovery.
Our physiotherapy team can help with:

- Moving around in bed
- Using equipment such as walking aids, splints and collars
- Prescribing exercises to help built strength and endurance

Working as a member of your care team, the psychology service will formulate with you a care plan to address your social and emotional well-being, addressing difficulties including:

- Anxiety problems
- Anger issues
- Depression and other mood disorders

The Calvary Refugee Mentoring Program is a part of Calvary’s Community Benefit program. Calvary staff volunteer to give people with a refugee background the opportunity to gain experience in Australian workplaces.
The Calvary Bruce Private Hospital Refugee Mentoring Program helps refugees recognise career opportunities and understand the qualifications required.
Work placements cover a wide range of work experiences including:

Working as a member of your care team, the psychology service will formulate with you a care plan to address your social and emotional well-being, addressing difficulties including:
- Adjustment issues arising from changed life circumstances
- Anxiety problems
- Anger issues
- Depression and other mood disorders
- Grief and bereavement issues
- Smoking, alcohol and illegal drug use
The discharge liaison officer also involves working with you to help you achieve goals and ensure safe discharge from hospital back into the community. Social work is carried out in collaboration with patients and families as well as doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals.

Tests and diagnostic services
Diagnostic services cover a range of scans, x-rays and laboratory tests used by specialists to determine the cause of an illness.
Endoscopy is a general term covering any procedure that involves examining the interior of the body with an endoscope. Calvary Bruce Private Hospital has a specialist team that carries out all endoscopic treatments.
Endoscopic procedures may be performed as a planned admission, and in most instances this is a day procedure. Admitted patients may also have an endoscopic procedure as a part of their inpatient treatment, most often to assist their diagnosis or to treat an identified medical issue.
Endoscopy can be used in the following procedures:
- Bronchoscopy (examination of the lungs)
- Colonoscopy (examination of the large bowel)
- Cystoscopy (examination of cysts) in the bladder
- Endoanal ultrasounds (examination of your anal canal)
- ECTT (examination of pancreatic ducts, bile duct, gall bladder and liver ducts)
- Gastroscopy (examination of the stomach)
- Oesophageal manometry (examination of the throat)
Please note:
- Endoscopy is carried out under anaesthesia, which means you won’t be able to drive home after your procedure.
- You’ll receive instruction from your GP about preparing for your endoscopy. Please follow them carefully.
Direct access endoscopy service
The direct access endoscopy service at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital aims to provide quick access to patients, without complex symptoms or co-morbidity, to a gastroscopy or colonoscopy (routine checks, family history, positive FOBT), without the delay of specialist consultation.
How to access this service
Your GP or specialist will initiate your endoscopy arrangements with our surgical bookings team who will contact you to discuss appointment arrangements.

At Calvary Bruce Private Hospital we provide on-site medical imaging and radiology services, managed by the Canberra Imaging group.
The Medical Imaging Service at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital performs:

- Multi-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scans
- Vascular and soft tissue ultrasound
- X-rays
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for Calvary Bruce Private Hospital is available from the Canberra Imaging Group.
