Ann Zangari, Personal Carer, St Catherine’s Retirement Community, Berri, South Australia

I have been with Calvary since they took over at St Catherine’s in 2016 and at St Catherine’s all up since 1990 when it was with the Sisters of St Joseph. It will be 31 years in August since I started working in aged care.

My older sisters worked for Sisters of St Joseph, one as a personal carer and the other in the laundry. Initially I applied for a laundry and kitchen position.  After a while, Sr Maryellen suggested I would make a good carer and asked if I would like to give it ago. I have enjoyed my time and I love working with the elderly and listening to their stories, and they really appreciated and loved what you did for them.

I really love getting a smile and laugh out of residents and also encouraging staff to work together. A proud moment was when the family of one resident, Laura, nominated me for an employee of the year one year.

There are many residents who have inspired me. You have so much fun and laughter. I love to give them special treatment and one-on-one time which they are grateful for and the families appreciate it as well.
