Sr Loreto Allen LCM

Sharing the Spirit of Venerable Mary Potter

Sr Mary Loreto Allen LCM was a much loved sister of the Little Company of Mary for 77 years, who passed away peacefully at Ryde Calvary Retirement Community on 21 July 2018 in her 99th year.

Sr Loreto joined the LCM order in 1941. She devoted herself to caring for the sick and dying with compassion, sensitivity and a spirit of love.

She started working at Lewisham Hospital, where she completed her General Nursing during very hard years. Sr Loreto then went on to work in Midwifery at Wagga Wagga, Hobart, Calvary Cairns, and Calvary Kogarah, then went to the Retreat Center in Overdale.

She moved to the Maternal Heart Covent, at Dalton Gardens (Calvary Ryde) in 1994 where she was able to volunteer at the nursing home close by, but also take advantage of the empty garages which she filled with beautiful plants, pots and garden feed.

She looked after the gardens that surrounded the Covent, caring for the flowers and birds that would come to feed at the back door.

She cared tenderly for the residents in the nursing home, bringing them flowers from the gardens each day and giving one to each and every patient for over 20 years until her death.

These flowers became a hallmark for Sr Loreto’s life,

“I like to give people a rose who are new to Calvary Retirement Community Ryde as it is a way of welcoming others here and we can share the Spirit of our founder, the Venerable Mary Potter.” – Sr Loreto Allen LCM

When Sr Loreto herself moved into the nursing home, she still managed to find her way through the gates to tend to her plants and grow beautiful flowers to give away.

We thank Sr Loreto for what she has done for the Little Company of Mary over the past 78 years.

She dedicated herself to serving others and embodying our message of ‘Being for Others’.

She left us with many wonderful memories of a gracious and loving woman, who was committed to her God, and to the Spirit and Charism of Venerable Mary Potter.
