At Calvary Bruce Private Hospital we recognise your pregnancy and journey to parenthood is uniquely personal. Our services are flexible and we will strive to meet your desires while always placing you and your baby’s health at the forefront of your treatment plan.

We generally conduct tours of the maternity ward on 3.00 pm each Sunday

Through your pregnancy you and your Obstetrician will formulate the plans for having your baby at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital.

They will provide a referral which will in turn lead to childbirth and parenting education programs and workshops. A Pre-Admission appointment will also be arranged for later in your pregnancy.

Education Sessions

Calvary Private Hospital offers a range of free education sessions to help you prepare for the birth of your baby. There is a session to suit all circumstances whether you are a first time parent or if you have had a baby previously.

The sessions are provided in a friendly, interactive supportive environment which includes the expertise of both midwives and physiotherapists.

This is a comprehensive series for first time parents.

Topics include:

  • Exercise in pregnancy and pelvic floor care
  • Pregnancy signs and symptoms that need to be reported
  • Normal labour and birthing
  • Self help strategies to assist during labour and support persons role
  • Medical pain management
  • Medical interventions including induction of labour, vacuum, forceps and caesareans
  • Care of mother and baby after birth and breastfeeding basics
  • Expected changes to lifestyle and strategies that help at home
  • Available community resources and how to access them
  • Tour of the maternity unit, Special Care Nursery and Postnatal Ward.

Week 1: Tuesday 6pm – 9pm

Week 2: Tuesday 6pm – 9pm

Week 3: Tuesday 6.30pm – 8.30pm (Physio session)

The One Day Course is a condensed version of the course above designed for first time parents whose time is limited or as a refresher course for repeat parents. This course is held on a monthly basis and includes a tour of the maternity unit.

In addition to the topics listed above information regarding VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Caesarean Section) is included.

Please note that we are currently sharing our Ante-Natal classes with Calvary John James therefore take note of your class location when receiving your booking letter.

Saturday 9.30am – 3.30pm AND a Tuesday night Physiotherapy Session 7pm – 9pm

This session is specifically designed for those parents who know they will be having (or who are likely to have) a caesarean birth.

Mothers expecting twins are also encouraged to attend.

Topics are purposely selected and include:

  • Pelvic floor care
  • Movement and mobility after caesarean
  • What to expect before, during and after caesarean
  • Effective pain management
  • Tour of the operating theatre

Session is held once per month on a Thursday from 9.30am – 12pm

Whether a first time parent or experienced mother this is a very worthwhile session on breastfeeding.

Topics covers all aspects of breastfeeding, for example:

  • Anatomy/physiology of the breast
  • How milk is made
  • Normal infant behaviour
  • Normal feeding patterns

These classes are facilitated by a lactation consultant who will be able to respond/advise you on your individual queries.

Sessions are held one Thursday per month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Lactation Support

After your baby arrives, our Midwives can offer support and advice to mothers win their breast feeding journey. A number of our Midwives are internationally qualified Lactation Consultants and all mothers have access to a dedicated session with a qualified Lactation Consultant.

Calvary Bruce Private Hospital Lactation Support Service

The Calvary Bruce Private Hospital Lactation Support Service is available postnatally to patients to assist mother and baby to develop breast feeding practices that maximize the health and nutrition benefits and foster physical and emotional fulfillment.

The service is available for a single appointment to address specific breast feeding issues, or patients can have a series of appointments if required.

The appointments are one-on-one between a qualified Lactation consultant and the mother and child. The service is provided in a warm and friendly environment, and does not require a referral.
