Billy – social support

Calvary Haydon Retirement Community
Billy is 94 and was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia OAM in recognition of her service to the Public Service while living in Washington DC.
I help out by visiting people in the nursing home, many of whom spend a lot of time in bed.
I wanted to become a volunteer because I feel I am doing something useful for those less fortunate.
My favourite thing about volunteering is getting to know the families of the people I visit.
My inspiration is knowing that families appreciate what I am doing and it is of some comfort for them to know I can help fill the gap when they are busy or unable to visit.
My biggest surprise about volunteering is how good one feels about it.
My advice to someone who is thinking about volunteering is by all means do it. I firmly believe I get more out of it that what I put in. Volunteering is what keeps me going and I look forward to doing it seven days a week. I am a single unmarried 94 year old woman and I want to do this work as long as I can.
