Calvary Tanilba Shores Leisure and Lifestyle Program Helps Support Male Resident’s Wellbeing

Men’s Health Week 2017 runs from the 12th-18th of June and focuses on improving and maintaining the health of men, boys and their families. This year’s theme “Healthy body – Healthy mind: Keeping the balance” explores the different ways men and boys are managing to keep healthy, physically and emotionally, in a busy and sometimes challenging world.

Naomi Middlemiss is the Leisure and Lifestyle Officer at Calvary Tanilba Shores Retirement Community in Tanilba Bay. She is passionate about providing residents with engaging programs that support their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. She has worked in the aged care industry for over 14 years in various roles as a care service employee, a nurse’s aid and in the Leisure and Lifestyle role.

“When residents first come to Tanilba, I sit down with them and have a chat about what they want to do each day. I plan activities around these conversations. I try make the program diverse by adding new events and bringing communities group into our site”.

Naomi said “Its particular important to provide engaging activity programs for our six male residents. They may not enjoy craft but instead enjoy participating in activities like our men’s shed and our footy tipping comp”.

Calvary Tanilba Shores Resident Bill Kelly enjoys the varied program. “I am still able to continue to work on my modelling here. I am currently building a sailing ship. I also enjoy gardening. My pride and joy at the moment is my roses which I have started growing from cuttings from our front garden”.

Bill said “I enjoy doing jobs around the site. My main duty is raising the flag. I look after that and make sure it goes up after sunrise and comes in before sunset”. Bill continues, “While ever I am physically able I’ll do it”.

Naomi recognises how important her role is to men’s health. “My role is not just about providing engaging activities but also being a support to our residents. I am here to make sure they are happy and I am there for them if they need to talk”.
