Calvary Haydon Employee recognised at ACT Board of Studies Excellence Ceremony

18 year old Calvary Haydon Retirement Community employee Samantha Morris recently completed her HSC and in December 2016 was recognised for her efforts in Vocational Studies at the ACT Board of Studies Excellence Ceremony.
Samantha lives with her family in Canberra. She loves to travel and enjoys spending time with her family, friends and her little puppy Penny. She currently works as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) at Calvary Haydon in Bruce, ACT. “My role includes assisting the residents to meet their daily needs and requirements. This ranges from personal hygiene care, assistance with activities of daily living, emotional wellbeing to physical assistance”.
Samantha started working at Calvary Haydon through her Australian School Based Apprenticeship in Aged Care and Ageing Support. It involved completing a series of assessment booklets and practical workshops. She completed a Certificate III in Aged Care at Key 2 Learning which took approximately 10 months and is currently studying Certificate IV in Ageing Support which she will finish in early April.
Completing the VET courses in her final years at school opened her eyes to the opportunities available in nursing. Samantha thoroughly enjoys working in aged care but would love to explore other areas of health in throughout her career. Since completing her HSC she has been accepted to study a degree in nursing and midwifery at the University of Canberra.
Samantha said “I have always wanted to be a nurse and I had a strong interest in aged care so I felt this course was a natural step for me to take in order to begin my journey in health care. My grandma was a palliative care nurse for over 50 years. My mum has been an excellent disability care worker for over 20 years and the RN’s here at Calvary are so hardworking so I have been surrounded by very caring and inspiring role models”.
“I really couldn’t imagine being anything other than a nurse. I like to feel as though I can contribute to someone’s life positively and I think being a nurse gives you that opportunity”.
