Calvary Research Institute Chair shares research findings during speaking tour of Hong Kong
29th November 2017
Calvary Palliative and End of Life Care Research Institute Chair, Professor Liz Lobb was a guest of the University of Hong Kong and the HK Hospital Authority in July. Professor Lobb ran workshops for palliative care nurses on Loss, Grief and Bereavement in Palliative Care; Anticipatory Grief and Complicated Grief. She also attended roundtable meetings with government ministers and NGOs at the University of Hong Kong where she presented the NSW experience of the development and implementation of the Palliative and End of Life Blueprint for Improvement.
Professor Lobb also ran workshops for social workers on Couple Communication about End of Life issues, based on a research study done at Calvary Health Care Kogarah in Sydney, and Enhancing Therapeutic Effectiveness, drawing from Professor Harvey Chochinov’s dignity therapy work.
Professor Cecilia Chan, Si Yuan Chair Professor in Health and Social Work, at the University of Hong Kong said of Liz’s visit “You have helped us move mountains. We are ever so grateful to you for your presence. Not only were the feedback of the workshop participants very positive, the participants of the close- door meetings felt enlightened by your sharing”.
Professor Lobb also gave a public talk on Person-Centered Care at End of Life which was attended by 120 people; mainly cancer patients, their families and clinicians. She also attended the opening of a new cancer care centre run by the Hong Kong Cancer Fund and supported by the Jockey Club of Hong Kong. The Jockey Club End of Life Community Care project has provided funding to support many community based services for palliative care patients. Despite a class 8 typhoon which interrupted one of her workshops, she said she was over-whelmed by the kindness and support she was given during her 12 day visit.
Calvary Palliative and End of Life Care Research Institute was established in 2017. Internationally respected Professor Liz Lobb is Professor of Palliative Care at Calvary Health Care Kogarah, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Notre Dame in Sydney.
