An exceptional teacher
9th March 2020
At a February Whole of Hospital Grand Rounds the Calvary Mater Newcastle Excellence in Clinical Teaching Awards winner was announced, with congratulations going to Dr Susan Miles, Staff Specialist Department of General Medicine, taking out the accolade.
Associate Professor Tim Walker, Clinical Dean, Calvary Mater Newcastle, said,
“Susan is a respiratory physician who has worked in the Department of General Medicine at Calvary Mater Newcastle for many years, and is widely regarded for the quality of care and teaching she provides.
“Susan is an exceptional teacher, who provides systematic approaches to learning in a way valued by all students. Susan is always patient, friendly, approachable and willing to teach. Students feel they are a valued part of her team at all times.”
Susan said of her win,
“I am very touched to have received this prize when there are so many exceptional teachers at the Mater who would also have been deserving of nomination. Recognition and thanks of any sort is always appreciated. It has helped to continue my enthusiasm for teaching and added to the enjoyment it gives me. Even at my stage of career I’m also delighted to receive teaching from both junior and senior doctors, other staff and of course patients. The importance of ‘at the bedside clinical teaching’ cannot be overestimated.
“I have had some inspirational teachers particularly my parents and also Dr Nick Saltos AM and Dr Michael Deacon who are well known at the Mater.”
The Excellence in Clinical Teaching Awards recognise Calvary Mater Newcastle staff who provide exceptional teaching, supervision and support to JMOs and medical students on the Mater campus.
In acknowledging the various ways in which staff contribute to the teaching and learning experience, the awards aim to generate awareness of the quality of teaching and service delivery by engaging junior and senior staff and students in the nomination and recognition of exceptional teachers and in so doing, seeks to demonstrate that teaching and mentorship is highly valued at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Well done Dr Miles.
