Calvary Adelaide reaches important milestone

The largest private hospital ever built in South Australia – the new $345 million Calvary Adelaide Hospital in Angas Street Adelaide central business district – has reached an important milestone with the official ‘topping out’ of construction at 12-storeys high.

The topping out celebration – which involves craning a ceremonial tree to the top of the site to signify the construction milestone – was watched by more than 70 invited guests including SA Premier Steven Marshall, Little Company of Mary Health Care Chair The Hon. John Watkins AM and Commercial & General Executive Chairman Jamie McClurg.

John Watkins noted Calvary’s long standing commitment to the people of South Australia.

“Calvary Adelaide Hospital represents the biggest investment Calvary Health Care has made in Australia. It is a statement of confidence in the South Australian economy and Calvary’s ongoing commitment to the long term health care needs of the people of Adelaide.”

“Calvary has been caring for South Australians for more than 100 years, and this new hospital enables us to increase capacity and meet rising demand for quality health care.”

Commercial and General Executive Chairman Jamie McClurg added “We’re thrilled to be working alongside Calvary to deliver the State’s largest ever private hospital and what will be an exceptional new medical facility in the heart of Adelaide.

“This is a great example of the private sector collaborating to create something special for South Australia, not only for the future of healthcare in our State but also as an enabler for jobs and careers.

“The joint venture with DEXUS underlines our commitment to supporting Australia’s burgeoning healthcare sector.”

The new Calvary Adelaide Hospital will replace the Calvary Wakefield Hospital in Wakefield Street, and the Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital at Walkerville and complement the existing services offered by Calvary North Adelaide Hospital and Calvary Central Districts Hospital at Elizabeth Vale.

The new state-of-the-art Calvary Hospital has capacity for 344 beds with 16 operating theatres and the State’s only privately-owned 24-hour emergency department. Patients will have single-occupancy rooms with ensuite bathrooms while a rehabilitation wing will offer a hydrotherapy pool and mobility garden. It will also be home to a custom-designed Hybrid Theatre, combining an operating theatre and radiology suite to diagnose and treat patients faster.

The new hospital will offer the community the most comprehensive range of services ever delivered by a private hospital in Adelaide including orthopaedic, cardiac, neurosurgical and rehabilitation specialities.

Around 700 hospital staff will relocate to the new facility. Over time due to the larger size of the Calvary Adelaide Hospital, Calvary will increase its workforce to meet demand.

Calvary Health Care will hold a 30-year lease on the new building, which is owned by Commercial & General as part of the Healthcare Wholesale Property Fund – a joint venture with ASX-listed DEXUS.
