Maureen still going strong after 32 years

Calvary Central Districts Hospital

This year is Maureen’s 32nd year volunteering at Calvary Central Districts.

I come in once a week, and currently, my role is to assist with collating information packs for patients. (Maureen catches two buses to do this! )

I started volunteering after visiting my father in law who was ill, and realising that there were many people in the hospital, especially the elderly, who had no visitors and were very lonely.

I joined the Red Cross volunteers when my children had grown, and have worked at Calvary Central Districts Hospital, the Lyell McEwin Hospital, and the old Salisbury Private Hospital.

Back then there weren’t many volunteers, so I worked on the wards interacting with the patients, which gave me a lot of satisfaction. This was where I really felt I lived the Calvary mission of ‘Being for others’.

When people ask me why I’m still volunteering, I tell them it’s because I enjoy it so much! Calvary Central Districts Hospital is like a second family to me. Over the time I have been here, I have made wonderful friendships, including Gill and Linda in admin who I have watched grow up!

I think what makes a good life is enjoying my family and garden. I have 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, and love sitting in my garden, enjoying the sun and a book.
