Lyn – all rounder

Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital

At Calvary Mater Newcastle I… Work in 5B the oncology ward one day a week where I help to make beds, empty the linen trolley, talk to patients who are able, restock the stores. I also do one day a week in the Melanoma Unit. There I assist more in the office helping with admin work.

I wanted to become a volunteer because… I needed to get out and I wanted to help others

My favourite thing about volunteering is… All the people I’ve met. Dealing with people who are so sick but so gracious.

My inspiration is… Another volunteer Sr Therese. She’s the first nun I’ve ever met or spoken to, she’s so down to earth, she’s great, she knows so much about family and kids.

My biggest surprise about volunteering is… How I’ve come out of my shell, my little world. I enjoy it, it is the best thing I’ve ever done, it is so rewarding.

My advice to someone who is thinking about volunteering at CMN is… Do it. You’ll find it very rewarding and you’ll meet a lot of new people.
