The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is a medical research institute located on the Rankin Park Campus, right behind John Hunter Hospital. HMRI is an internationally-recognised translational centre for asthma, cancer, diabetes, mental health, nutrition, pregnancy and reproduction, stroke and more. HMRI affiliation is open to all employees of the University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Local Health District and Calvary Mater Newcastle; please click here to register with HMRI. Calvary Mater Newcastle has a strong research partnership with the University of Newcastle. The university offers a number of library and scientific resources, which can be accessed here. For those interested in taking their research career to the next level a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree could provide a unique opportunity to follow a specific interest, in a particular area of research. HNE Health Libraries provide a range of services to assist and support research, teaching and information needs of all Hunter New England and Calvary Mater Newcastle staff. Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) offers a number of online research courses and programs, including:

  • Research: Introduction for beginners course – introduces the user to the language of research, it’s importance, characteristics, the types of research you can undertake and the steps required.
  • Research: Planning the research process – provides a step-by-step guide of the research process to prepare you for developing a research proposal.  Recommended for staff who wish to gain an understanding of the research process and/or may be considering undertaking research.
  • Rural Research Capacity Building Program – aims to increase the number of rural and remote health workers with knowledge and skills in evaluation and research methods.
