Family fun at Calvary Cessnock Open Day and Markets
15th March 2017
In line with Senior’s Week celebrations Calvary Cessnock Retirement Community hosted an Open Day and Markets on Saturday 11 March 2017.
Seniors Week NSW ran from Friday 3 March – Sunday 12 March 2017 and Calvary Cessnock’s Open Day was the anchor the celebrations throughout the Cessnock community. Presented by the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS), NSW Seniors Week is designed to celebrate the role seniors play and the contributions they make to the NSW community.
The Open Day and Markets were officially opened by Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent and Calvary General Manager Kristin Smith. Major Bob Pynsent congratulated Calvary Cessnock for their involvement throughout the entire Seniors Week and was impressed by the work of employees to make the day a reality.
The Open Day featured markets, a vintage car display and a family and carer’s expo. There was a variety of stallholders including handmade crafts, jewellery, a BBQ, a raffle and cake stall.
Groups from the local community also attended including local football club the Goannas, the Cessnock Woodturners and the local fire brigade.
Calvary Cessnock General Manager Kristin Smith said “It was a great day for our residents and staff. Residents got to mingle with the local community and enjoy browsing through the markets stalls. Many of our residents even had a dance to the band’s older tunes”. Kristin continued, “We took the local football team to our residents in the lodges who are not as mobile. Many of the gentleman here used to play for the goannas and reminisced on their younger days”.
The Open Day also gave the Cessnock community the opportunity to learn more about and tour the aged care site.
Kids had plenty to do with a jumping castle, colouring in competition, face painting, airbrush tattoos and a lolly stand.
Market goers listened to the smooth tunes of local band The Hi Fi’s. Soloists from Kirsty Gunther Academy of Dance and cheerleading squad the Chief Allstars also performed on the day.
